Truth In Recruiting & Classroom Outreach

Our VFP Chapter is dedicated to reaching out to the public and educating them on the reality of life in the U.S. military.  Our members have extentensive experience speaking in classrooms and provide a wealth of information about what it means to be in the military based on our lived experiences.

INVITE Veterans For Peace INTO YOUR CLASSROOM: Our members are happy to come out to schools and events and speak about our military experiences and peace perspectives. Contact Us to request a speaker.

BECOME INFORMED

BEFORE YOU ENLIST!

Did you know?

  • Military training is for military jobs:  Less than 10% of Veterans say that they were able to use their military training in civilian jobs.

  • Military Sexual Trauma (MST):  1 in 3 female and 1 in 100 male soldiers report being sexually assaulted while in the military, by fellow soldiers - often their supervisors.  The actual numbers are likely higher.

  • Education Benefits:  Many people join the military for the GI Bill.  Few Veterans actually use it either because it is HARD to go back to school after serving in a war or they now have families and need to work or both.

  • Enlistment Bonuses:  It does sound tempting to get a big enlistment bonus, however they are paid in installments over time and they are heavily taxed. Failure on your part to fulfill your contract for any reason will result in forfeiture of unpaid bonus and repayment of some/all money received.

  • Delayed Entry Program:  Even if you are in the DEP, you are still eligible to walk away without any penalties - despite what anyone tells you.

  • You can not be guaranteed a specific job in the military, nor can you ever be guaranteed not to deploy --- despite what your recruiter tells you.

The American Public Health Association Policy Statement 20123:  Cessation of Military Recruiting in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools

"The evidence available demonstrates that military service is associated with worse health outcomes for the youngest recruits and therefore supports the removal of military recruiting from our nation’s high schools, where the youngest and most vulnerable recruits are found."

Support H.R. 392: Student Privacy Protection Act:Tell your Congressional Representative that you want military recruiting efforts to honor the privacy rights of our children and their families.  The No Child Left Behind Act requires public schools to divulge students' personal information to military recruiters without their parents' consent.  The Student Privacy Protection Act will change this military recruiting practice from an “opt-out” to an “opt-in” program.  This simple change would ensure that schools do not divulge students' personal information to military recruiters unless their parents explicitly consent to such a release.

You have the right to OPT OUT!

Federal public law 107-110, Section 9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), "No Child Left Behind Act" requires school districts to release student names, addresses, and phone numbers to military recruiters upon their request.  Click HERE for an Opt Out form to provide your school.
